A baby freshwater crocodile has given a group of Darwin primary school children a scare after it charged at them and tried to bite a girl’s ankle.
Shakira Brown-Edwards was playing on the oval at Manunda Terrace Primary School, in Karama, yesterday when the feisty little reptile ripped a hole in her sock.
“I freaked out and ran away,” the nine-year-old student told the NT News newspaper.
The school’s principal Sally Winch said she had never seen her students move so fast.
The two-year-old crocodile was put in an esky until rangers arrived.
Croc ranger Tom Nichols said the baby crocodile could have come from nearby Holmes Jungle.
“But it’s more likely someone picked it up on a fishing trip or something and it escaped from their yard,” he said.
