BAE Systems grasps £2.5b Oman deal

The firm said in a statement that it will begin to deliver the aircraft to Oman from 2017.

“BAE Systems welcomes the decision by the Sultanate of Oman to purchase 12 Typhoon and eight Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer aircraft,” it said.

“As well as supplying aircraft, BAE Systems will provide in-service support to the Royal Air Force of Oman’s operational tasks. Deliveries are expected to commence in 2017,” it added.

The deal follows BAE’s announcement back in December that it has failed to agree with Saudi Arabia on the final price of a contract to deliver the Persian Gulf state 72 Typhoons.

At the time, BAE said Saudi Arabia has so far received 24 aircraft from the group, but further deliveries will be delayed over pricing disagreements.

The deal with Oman can somehow compensate the loss due to the Saudi blow and the collapse of BAE’s planned merger with European arms producer EADS in 2012.
