Britain should take Salmond seriously

Scotland’s outgoing First Minister Alex Salmond has threatened to take matters into the nation’s “democratic hands” if Britain reneges on its promise to devolve powers to the country. Experts believe Downing Street should take his warning very seriously.

Scottish Political Analyst James Stuart tells Press TV’s UK Desk that Salmond has made a household name for himself in the UK and that forces London to listen to him, although he’s leaving his post.

“The British political establishment has learnt to take Salmond very seriously. And, unlike Westminster politicians, he is known to follow through on his promises,” Stuart said. “When SNP leader and Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond resigned on September 19th, the day after the referendum, there was some gloating that he was a beaten man. But the weeks since have proven the contrary, the Scottish National Party is soaring in the polls,” he added.

Stuart believes that Salmond, whose party is considered a kingmaker in May 2015 elections, can take the fight for Scotland’s self-determination to the heart of the British politics-the Westminster.

“It is seen as very likely that Alex Salmond will stand for election to the British parliament in May 2015, probably targeting a seat of a senior Liberal Democrat politician, the coalition partners of the ruling Conservatives,” says the Scottish blogger. “Then he will lead a substantial block of SNP MP’s into Westminster, where it looks probable they could hold the balance of power in a hung parliament, leaving Salmond essentially calling the shots over who is able to form a government,” Stuart added.
