China censures US human rights report

“By no means should these issues be used as tools to meddle in the domestic affairs of other countries. We hope that the United States will truly take a long, hard look at itself and put an end to its mistaken ways and thinking,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a statement issued on Friday, Xinhua reported.

“The United States has turned a blind eye to its own woeful human rights situation and remained silent about it… The country is lying to itself when referring to itself as the ‘land of the free,’” the statement said.

Beijing also criticized Washington over the religious and racial discrimination in the United States.

“Ethnic minorities and non-Christians are discriminated against in fields like law enforcement, justice and religion, rendering the so-claimed ethnic equality and religious freedom nothing but self-glorifying forged labels,” the statement added.

On Thursday, the US State Department released the report, which claims that the human rights situation in China deteriorated in 2011 since more activists were aggressively silenced in that year.
