Melburnians are nursing injuries and repairing their houses after severe winds and heavy rain lashed the city, bringing down powerlines and trees.
Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs were hardest hit during Sunday’s big storm with around 1400 calls for help coming in across the city as wind gusts tipped close to 100km/h in some areas.
SES spokesman Lachlan Quick says a few hundred jobs still need to be attended to on Monday, but crews expect to be all wrapped up by mid-morning.
Several people were injured during Sunday’s storm as they sought shelter under trees and were struck by falling branches.
“Never take shelter under a tree during a storm,” he said.
“It’s one of the most dangerous places you can be.”
Some residents even parked their cars under big trees, only to have branches come down and damage their vehicles.
Meanwhile, several homeowners attempted to repair their roofs after wind gusts, only to slip and fall in the wet and windy conditions.
More than 14,000 homes lost power in Melbourne’s west and northwest, while about 700 homes were blacked out around the city and in the eastern and southeastern suburbs.
The strong winds also lifted the kite surfer off the water and into a heavy landing on the beach, breaking both his ankles at Rosebud, on the Mornington Peninsula.
