‘Corrupt police in UK goes unpunished’

Dame Anne Owers made the comments after it emerged that out of over 8,500 accusations of corruption within the British police, only 13 criminal convictions were made, reported The Independent.

The allegations of wrongdoing included crimes as serious as rape and blocking the course of justice. Moreover, some of the accused officers were from the most senior posts.

Owers said the British public has grown quite skeptical about the British police’s integrity and transparency in this regard as they show reluctance towards investigating colleagues’ alleged crimes.

“The public is understandably doubtful about the extent to which, in this particular instance, the police can investigate themselves”, said Owers.

Calls have been made for subjecting the IPCC itself to independent investigation by a powerful parliamentary committee.

“A serious focus on tackling police corruption is important”, said Owers.

The British police have been subject to a series of misconduct allegations over the recent years such as receiving inappropriate payments, related to the phone hacking scandal, and racial abuse.
