Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy says Cairo seeks to expand its relations with Iran as an influential country in the Middle East.
Describing Egypt as an important country in the Arab world, Fahmi said the two countries should not ignore one another despite various obstacles on the way of resuming bilateral relations, the Egyptian daily Al Tahrir reported.
The top Egyptian diplomat said the enhancement of ties with Iran requires considerable effort.
Fahmi rejected reports that Saudi Arabia was urging Egypt to refrain from resuming ties with Iran.
In October, Egyptian Prime Minister Hazem Beblawi said Cairo’s relations with Iran is line with the interests of the Persian Gulf and Arab states, adding that Cairo had sought stable and positive ties with the Islamic Republic since the establishment of the Egyptian interim government.
Egyptian interim President Adly Mansour took the oath of office after former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi was toppled in a military coup in July. The African country has been gripped by mounting tensions ever since.
Iran severed its diplomatic ties with Egypt after the 1979 Islamic Revolution because Egypt had signed the Camp David Accords with Israel and offered asylum to Iran’s deposed monarch, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
