Fairfax secures injunction against raid: report

The Age newspaper last night secured a Supreme Court injunction preventing Victoria Police from removing computer equipment in the wake of a raid on the newspaper’s office as part of an investigation into allegations that journalists at the newspaper may have illegally hacked into an ALP electoral database, according to a report by The Australian.

The incident began Thursday morning when Victoria Police detectives from the e-crime squad executed a search warrant to seize computers and documents.

The investigation focused on investigative reporters Royce Millar and Nick McKenzie, and police sought computer hard-drives and hard copy files used by the pair of journalists as part of an article published November 23, 2010 about whether the ALP was collecting private information about unknowing voters and distributing it to campaign workers, according to the report.

The journalists and senior editors may be called before a parliamentary inquiry to explain their reporting of the story, according to The Australian.
