Federico Garcia Lorca ‘could have fled Spain at start of Civil War’

But instead of leaving directly in early July, just days before Gen Francisco Franco mounted a military coup against Spain’s Second Republic, the author returned to his family home in Granada.

It was here, a month into the conflict that he was dragged from his home by a fascist death squad and shot, and his body thrown in an unmarked grave where it still lies to this day.

Now, a collection of papers has come to light following the death of Juan Ramirez de Lucas, a journalist and art critic who had kept his relationship with Lorca a secret until his death, aged 91, in 2010.

Ramirez was 19 years old and studying in Madrid when he met the 38-year old Lorca and the pair fell in love. According to diaries kept by Mr Ramirez, they discussed leaving Spain together and both went to their separate homes to bid farewell to their families.

The diaries show that Ramirez came up against fierce opposition from his father who refused to issue his son with papers so he could leave, according to a report in the Spanish daily newspaper El Pais. The delay cost Lorca his life.

The archive, which was kept in a box and given to the Ramirez’s sister for publication on his death bed, includes a poem written in Lorca’s hand on the inside cover of textbook and a letter sent by the poet to his lover dated July 18, 1936, a day after war broke out.

“It’s terribly exciting to learn new material exists that may shed light on his final days,” Ian Gibson, a biographer of Lorca, told The Daily Telegraph. “Lorca was very promiscuous and prone to infatuation but we never definitively knew who his last lover was or why he delayed leaving.”

Gibson explained that during his exhaustive research into Lorca the name of Mr Ramirez came up as someone close to the poet in his final weeks but that he had always refused an interview.

“One can only guess that he wanted to keep his association a secret especially during the Franco years. It wasn’t easy being gay and especially if it was a relationship with someone as famous as Lorca.

“We can only hope that the papers will be made available soon,” he added.
