Syria: Damascus rocked by double car bombing killing 55

The opposition, including the Free Syrian Army, deny they are using bombings
in their campaign, though they are targeting soldiers and other members of
the regime apparatus with sniper and rocket-propelled grenades.

They claim that the bombings are the work of the regime itself, and are a
deliberate ploy to link genuine resistance to the regime with international
terror. They point to frequent inconsistencies in reports of the bombings and
the immediate presence of state media to record them.

The bombings will put further pressure on western critics of the Assad regime
to change their tactics away from support for the Kofi Annan peace plan. But
with ex-President Nicolas Sarkozy, the leading figure in favour of
intervention in the Arab Spring, gone, President Barack Obama facing a
re-election campaign and Britain’s government facing internal battles, the
prospect of international action is receding.

Before the bombings, Ban Ki-Moon, the UN secretary-general, told the General
Assembly that there was an “alarming upsurge” in roadside attacks
and he feared a full-scale civil war with catastrophic effects.

Afterwards, his spokesman said: “The secretary-general strongly condemns
today’s attacks in Damascus. It’s an urgent call from him on all sides fully
to comply with their obligations to cease armed violence in all its forms,
and to protect civilians.”

American security officials and analysts believe there may be some truth to
claims by Damascus that Al-Qaeda is operating inside the country, even
though previously it used Syria as a route into Iraq.

“Al-Qaeda in Iraq has taken the lead for Al-Qaeda in getting involved in
Syrian operations,” Seth G. Jones, an analyst at the Rand Corporation
said. “There are a number of US estimates that point to this.”
