Former Tasmanian MP Terry Martin has avoided time in jail after being found guilty of having sex with a 12-year-old girl.
Justice David Porter today sentenced Martin to 10 months in jail, wholly suspended.
The 54-year-old was found guilty by a Supreme Court jury of unlawful sexual intercourse with a person under 17 and of producing child exploitation material.
In a lengthy explanation, Justice Porter said Martin’s offending was directly related to medication for Parkinson’s Disease which caused hypersexual desire.
He said that desire caused Martin to seek out 162 sex workers, one of which was the 12-year-old.
Justice Porter said that while the prostitution of the girl was deplorable, Martin would not have sought out the girl had it not been for the medication.
He said Martin’s reputation had been irreparably harmed, if not destroyed, and there was no likelihood of him re-offending.
Martin was abused as he left the court and refused to be interviewed by waiting media.
He is the third person to be sentenced for involvement with the girl, who was prostituted by her mother and pimp Garry Devine in 2009.
