‘Guardian angels’ to protect US troops

General John Allen said on Wednesday new measures have been taken to protect the US troops in Afghanistan, including the use of “guardian angels,” or soldiers who guard peers as they sleep, according to a report by NBC.

“We have taken steps necessary on our side to protect ourselves with respect to, in fact, sleeping arrangements, internal defenses associated with those small bases in which we operate,” Allen stated.

The US commander added that now someone is “always over-watching our forces.”

The latest announcement by John Allen comes at a time when public anger is on the rise in Afghanistan over the killing of at least 16 Afghan civilians by US troops.

Women and children sleeping in their homes were the main victims of the overnight massacre that occurred on March 11 in two villages in the Panjwaii district of Kandahar Province. The bodies of some of the victims were reportedly burnt by the US soldiers.

The murderous act has also heavily strained relations between Kabul and Washington.
