nsnbc : Heavy rainfall and landslides in Sri Lanka since Saturday have killed at least 15 and displaced over 370,000 persons . The death toll may rise since at least nine have been reported as missing.
Sri Lanka’s Ministry for Disaster Management informed the population and the press that the flash floods caused by torrential rainfall that began on Saturday triggered a series of landslides and that more than 73,000 families have been displaced by heavy flooding throughout the country.
Torrential rain, strong winds, falling trees and lightning has destroyed some 68 and damaged 1,300 houses. Tha is, houses other than those that were damaged by floods and landslides. The Ministry said the government is taking steps to minimize the impact of the disaster. The military will be assisting in rescue and recovery as well as in restoration efforts. Disaster Management Ministry Additional Secretary for Development, Sidambarapullai Amaranathan, told the press:
“As of now, over 160 000 people have been evacuated to flood relief camps from their houses on low-lying lands near rivers and beaches. They are being provided with cooked meals and are receiving medical treatment through services provided by divisional secretariats”.
208 flood relief centers in 10 districts throughout the island have been established. The centers are located in districts that have been known for being flood-prone since years, reports the Ministry. The floods have affected the Kandy, Colombo, Galle, Kurunegala, Ratnapura, Gampaha, Nuwara Eliya , Matara, Kalutara and Puttalam districts.
Amaranathan added that the government released Rs. 17.8 million to the Divisional Secretariats to provide the flood victims with emergency relief material, such as food. He also commented on the success with the implementation of he flood warning system hat may have prevented unnecessary deaths, saying “We issued flash flood warnings to the communities and successfully vacated people from flood-prone areas saving hundreds of lives.” Amaranathan said that the government currently estimates that 72,000 families and a total of 370,000 persons have been displaces by the extensive floods.
