More than 1,000 angry parents have forced the BBC to make an astonishing u-turn just 24 hours after overhauling popular children’s programme Waybaloo.

Furious mothers and fathers deluged the corporation to complain that their toddlers were upset and confused by a new voiceover on the programme and that they were being short-changed by cutting back episode lengths.

Waybaloo, which is set in the fictional land of Nara and features a family of four creatures called the Piplings, has built up a huge following with pre-school children since it first broadcast in 2009.

It airs at 6pm at the start of Bedtime Hour on the Cbeebies channel and encourages younger children to do gentle exercise and yoga.

But BBC bosses decided to overhaul the programme to try and appeal to older children – bringing in Dave Lamb, best known for his witty commentary of Channel 4 reality show Come Dine With Me, to narrate the show.

The show’s executive producer Vanessa Hill had unveiled her changes in a special blog on Sunday night – announcing the new voiceover and that the episodes would be shorter.

But after just one episode of the new format was broadcast the backlash from angry parents forced the BBC to backtrack and revert to the original format.

The corporation confirmed 150 had made formal complaints but more than 1,000 took to the Cbeebies website, Twitter, and parenting forums to voice their frustration.

One mother wrote: ‘It completely jars with the programme – just sounds like a sarcastic running commentary, just like Come Dine With Me.

All Dave Lamb succeeds in doing is repeating most of what the characters already say. What’s going on BBC?! Why mess with what was already working perfectly? I won’t be tuning in again – very irritating.’

Another said: ‘What have you done? My 18 month old just sat there looking confused and unhappy.

You had a very good enjoyable show and have completely ruined it by adding a narrator that isn’t needed, and slicing the show time in half. What were you thinking.’

Another added: ‘What is this nonsense? Come Dine With Waybaloo. The changes are actually upsetting for my children. Change it back please.’

Lamb had been brought in because he also voices Gory Games- a show for older children, and producers were keen to try to broaden the appeal of Waybaloo.

But in doing so some parents felt the show alienated the toddlers it is aimed at.

It has never had a narrator before and many felt it was an unnecessary waste of money and questioned why the episodes were being made shorter.

It is understood that he could feature on a spin-off aimed at older people but BBC executives said a noumber of ideas were in discussion.

The spokesman said: ‘We appreciate all the comments we’ve received on the new format for Waybaloo. We’ve listened to the feedback and have decided to revert to the original format for the show in the Bedtime Hour going forward.’
