IKEA Just Launched An Indoor Garden That Never Stops Growing Food

Imagine you could grow lettuce and herbs inside your house all year round? Well, you absolutely can, thanks to the new indoor hydroponic garden system from Ikea. This will allow anyone to easily grow fresh produce at home, without the use of soil and without any previous gardening experience.

How Does It Work?

This garden uses a hydroponic system, which simply means that no soil is needed to grow the plants — adequate light and water are enough. Many of the vegetables we eat today are grown this way. The seeds are sprouted using the absorbent foam plugs that come with the system; these plugs keep the seeds moist without over-watering them. After the seeds have germinated, you simply transfer the entire foam plug into its own little pot and fill it with pumice stones, which can hold a lot of water. These pots are then transferred to a growing tray equipped with a solar lamp, providing nourishment year-round for the little plants, even in rooms without any sunlight. If you have a windowsill that gets a lot of sun you could always place the seedlings there as well. The growing tray is even equipped with a built-in water sensor, which will help ensure your plants are watered at the perfect amount.

“The challenge was to make growing plants in a hydroponic system simple, so that anyone could succeed…” – Helena KarlénSwedish University of Agricultural Sciences

This is a pretty convenient little system! The design was developed in collaboration with agricultural scientists in Sweden. It is wonderful for those that live in apartments or don’t have a yard for a garden, but also for getting completely fresh produce even in the cold winter months.

When Can You Get It?

It may seem unusual for a furniture store like IKEA to be selling something like this, but the company has been notably forward-thinking over the past few years and has been following a trend towards sustainability. While the price is not set yet, IKEA plans to launch the hydroponic gardening kit in April. Look for KRYDDA/VÄXER series on IKEA shelves this spring!

While this isn’t the first indoor hydroponic system of its kind, it is certainly a more affordable option than most, and ideal for those who have little space to work with.
