Israeli police attack striking workers

Over 500 striking aviation workers gathered outside the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in al-Quds (Jerusalem) on Sunday as cabinet members were meeting over ratification of Israel’s “Open Skies” deal with EU.

The angry protesters set alight several tires and shouted slogans against the agreement. Police says at least eight people were arrested.

Despite the protest, the cabinet overwhelmingly approved the agreement. Israeli Finance Minister Yair Lapid said the deal would not be implemented until April 2014.

Workers at Israel’s three main airlines, El Al, Arkia and Israir, went on open-ended strike on Sunday to protest against the deal.

They say the deal jeopardizes their jobs and could even cause the local airline industry to collapse.

Israel and the EU signed the deal last year to open up and integrate their markets. Under the accord, European Union airlines will operate direct flights to the occupied Palestinian territories from anywhere in the world.

Israeli carriers will also fly to airports across the EU. The Israeli cabinet is expected to ratify the agreement later in the day.

Supporters of the plan say it would lower ticket prices and boost tourism industry.
