Liberal WA senator to step down in 2014

The West Australian Liberal Party is searching for two new senators following the death of one and the announcement by another he will not contest the next federal election.

Senator Judith Adams died after a long battle with cancer on March 31 and on Tuesday fellow WA Senator Alan Eggleston said he would step down when his term ended in June 2014.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott will attend Senator Adams’ funeral in the Wheatbelt town of Kojonup on Wednesday.

The WA Liberals must also find two candidates for the lower house to replace retiring backbenchers Judi Moylan and Mal Washer.

Among candidates being considered for a Senate or lower house seat are State Liberal Party treasurer Dean Smith and aerobatic pilot Drew Searle.

Retiring WA Mines Minister Norman Moore, farmer Jane Mouritz and former Liberal staffer Alex Butterworth have also been touted as possible senators.

Senator Eggleston has served in the Senate for the past 18 years but will not stand for a fourth term.

He said in a statement he had sought to give WA’s northwest a voice in federal parliament and actively represent its interests, including his push to have a patrol boat base established on the Pilbara coast “to defend the powerhouse region of the Australian economy”.

Senator Eggleston said that through his position as chair of the Senate Economics References Committee he had set up an inquiry to preserve the role of the WA government in regulating offshore oil and gas developments.

He remains opposed to Gillard government moves to set up a national federal regulator to replace state regulation of the oil and gas sector.

Senator Eggleston said he would continue to vigorously speak up for the interests of WA in the Senate until his term ended.
