Lifesavers on the far NSW south coast are having what they say is probably the busiest holiday period ever with more than 70 people rescued in the past week.
Surf Life Saving south coast duty officer Andrew Edmunds said there had been rescues every day with the summer heat and inviting conditions making a dangerous mix for holiday makers.
“It’s the busiest we’ve probably ever been,” Mr Edmunds told AAP.
“We’ve had 19 call-outs in a seven-day period and some of the busiest days we’ve ever had.
“Up to five, six jobs in the one day.
“We’ve had over 70 people rescued this week.”
Mr Edmunds said the good weather was to blame.
“The weather seems really nice, which has drawn the crowds,” he said.
“We’ve had a lot of people at the beaches and it’s been really good conditions.”
On Christmas Eve, a 30-year-old Canberra man died at Dolphin Point.
On Friday, a man in his 60s was found floating face down at an unpatrolled beach at Bawley Point.
Also on Friday, a jet skier was rescued and towed to shore at Merimbula and two young women were returned to shore after being trapped on cliffs at Malua Beach.
On December 27 a father and two children paddling kayaks at the mouth of the Moruya River were rescued after big waves tossed them from their craft and dragged them out to sea.
Mr Edmunds said beachgoers should remember to swim only between the flags and people participating in water sports should have all the appropriate safety equipment.
