The Volvo station wagon is back.
After technically selling only crossovers in the U.S. since the 2011 model year, Volvo announced that it will sell the V60 compact wagon here in early 2014, showing off a European-spec version of the car at the 2013 New York International Auto Show yesterday.
Volvo isn’t giving many details about the 2014 V60, but it’s a wagon version of the company’s best-seller in the U.S.: the S60 sedan. The S60 is priced from $31,900, available with front- and all-wheel-drive, and powered by a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine or a turbocharged 3.0-liter six. Volvo has also shown the V60 as a plug-in hybrid.
The V60 has a curvier look than Volvo wagons of old, but the look is partially deceiving – low rearmost windows give a look that the roof has sloped down dramatically toward the rear of the car, which it in fact does not. So visibility suffers in the name of style compared to a boxier-looking wagon, but cargo space remains ample. The rear seat folds flat in three sections.
When it goes on sale, the V60 will join the XC70 – a larger wagon with standard all-wheel-drive and high ground clearance, which Volvo markets as a crossover – along with two true crossovers, the XC60 and XC90.
Volvo is also displaying updated 2014 versions of most of its other models: the S60 and S80 sedans, along with the XC60 and XC70 crossovers.
Of those, the S60 and XC60 received the biggest change: a redesigned front end and upgraded cabin electronics. All models receive the latter, and the S80 and XC70 received more modest styling tweaks. The XC90, by far Volvo’s oldest current product, is expected to be fully redesigned for 2015.
