A Liberal National Party (LNP) government would be at the beck and call of mining interests if it pulls apart the state’s environment and resources department, its minister says.
LNP leader Campbell Newman on Thursday pledged to split the Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) into three if his party wins power.
Mr Newman said “green extremists” had too much influence over “the biggest problem department in the state”.
DERM would be replaced by a mining and energy department, a resources department, and an environmental regulator, he said.
The minister responsible for the department, Vicky Darling, said this showed the LNP had no interest in protecting the environment.
Splitting up DERM would mean an LNP government would be at the beck and call of big mining companies and developers, Ms Darling said.
“This is a nightmare return to the bad old days where the mines department was in charge of issuing approvals for mines,” she said in a statement.
“How can you separate mining approvals from environmental regulation?”
The minister hit back at Mr Newman’s claim that the green lobby had too much influence over DERM.
“I fail to see how protecting the world-renowned Great Barrier Reef is an action by green extremists,” she said.
DERM had also stopped indefinite sandmining on Stradbroke Island, was regulating coal seam gas (CSG) activity and was protecting the state’s wild rivers, Ms Darling said.
