Mayor praises thrill-seekers for makeshift slide

A Western Australian mayor has praised the creators of a makeshift beach waterslide for their “ingenuity”, despite the fact it was not approved by council.

Bunbury mayor David Smith told ninemsn the slide looked like fun and he did not want to be a “killjoy”, after footage emerged of thrill-seekers riding it down a steep sand dune at Hastie Beach last week.

But the mayor does not want the slide to continue to operate without council approval.

Council rangers are now investigating it for fear it could be dangerous.

“Initially I want to congratulate (the creators) for their ingenuity,” Cr Smith told ninemsn.

“But just because it’s exciting doesn’t mean it’s safe.”

A group of adrenalin junkies filmed themselves riding the waterslide and posted the footage on YouTube on December 29.

The slide sends riders flying down a bushy ridge before coming to a bumpy halt on the sand below.

Several people who rode the slide posted comments on YouTube, thanking the people who built it but also complaining that it left them feeling sore.

“My kids had a ball! But very sore too … thanx guys for the ride and extra thanx to the camera man! Happy New Year!” one commented.

Another rider was also left with a painful reminder: “Thanks heaps for videoing! Im not sure how the other guys pulled up but I am sore as HELL today, and I only went down [it] once!”

The mayor said council had received no complaints, but he feared if anyone was injured on the slide they could seek hundreds of thousands in damages.

“It’s not something I want to see repeated,” Cr Smith told ninemsn.

“If it is it needs to be managed and designed in a safe way.”
