Mitt Romney accuses Barack Obama of boasting about Osama bin Laden raid

Mr Obama is seen on the programme holding the now-famous photograph of him and
his team watching a live feed of the raid. He says that he believes it was
taken as one of the US helicopters crashed. “There’s silence at this point
inside the room,” he adds.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is asked for her reaction one year on to
the photograph, in which she is pictured covering her mouth in apparent
shock. “That’s the way I usually look when my husband drags me to an action
movie,” she says. “What it conjures up is the emotions that were running
through me and every other person in that small group. It was just a great
experience and a great privilege to be part of.”

At a press conference on Monday, a smirking Mr Obama denied that he was guilty
of “excessive celebration”. However he was unable to resist
another gibe at Mr Romney on the subject.

“I’d just recommend that everybody take a look at people’s previous
statements,” said Mr Obama. In 2007 Mr Romney said it was “not
worth moving heaven and earth and spending billions of dollars just trying
to catch one person”.

The President was attacked by John McCain, whom he defeated in the 2008
election. “You know the thing about heroes? They don’t brag,” said
Mr McCain.

George Pataki, the Republican governor of New York at the time of the
September 11 attacks, said he was “appalled” at Mr Obama’s
behaviour. “I think it’s wrong, I think it should stop and I think the
president should apologise,” he told Fox News Concern was even
expressed by Adm. Mike Mullen, Mr Obama’s chairman of the joint chiefs of
staff at the time of last year’s raid. “I do worry a great deal that
this time of year that somehow this gets spun into election politics,”
he told NBC News.

Democrats pointed out, however, that George W. Bush made his bellicose
response to al-Qaeda a key plank of his re-election campaign against Senator
John Kerry in 2004. One television advertisement put out by backers of Mr
Bush asked: “Would you trust Kerry against these fanatic killers?”
