Romney was declared the winner on Tuesday night. US television networks said he won the race with 56 percent of votes, while former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum gained 27 percent of ballots.
The two other Republican presidential candidates; former House speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas congressman Ron Paul came in far behind with nine and seven percent of the votes respectively.
Romney previously secured at least 183 of the 419 ‘Super Tuesday’ delegates to be won.
The Illinois win takes the former governor one step closer to finalizing his party’s nomination to run against President Barack Obama in November.
The US president is, however, not elected directly by the people. The Electoral College does the voting, which means a candidate could become president despite losing the popular vote.
