The Boston University students who were studying in New Zealand were killed on Saturday near the North Island town of Taupo after their vehicle drifted to the side of the road and then rolled as the driver tried to correct the course, New Zealand police said.
The students were reportedly headed for Tongariro National Park, where they were planning to hike the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
Two men and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene. Another woman is in critical condition in Waikato Hospital, meanwhile four other students, all in their 20s, are being treated for moderate injuries at local hospitals.
Police say it is not clear why the van has drifted to the side of the road and some of the students were thrown from the vehicle, stressing that they may not have been wearing seat belts.
