Newman releases public service cut figures

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has confirmed the state’s public service shrunk by about 3000 workers last month, but says it’s set to grow again.

Union members will rally in Brisbane on Monday, threatening unprecedented industrial action if they don’t get clarity on job threats this week.

Mr Newman argues the state can’t afford to pay 20,000 public servants and has warned unions against negotiating unrealistic pay rises.

Payroll figures released on Monday confirmed 3000 full-time equivalent jobs went at the end of June, a day dubbed “Black Friday” by unions.

There were 198,944 full-time equivalent employees in the fortnight ending July 13, down from 201,934 full-time equivalents on June 29, the figures showed.

Mr Newman says some of the decrease reflected the regular reduction of casual teachers that occurs at the end of a school term, which could rise again within weeks.

“The fact is thanks to Labor, Queensland has to borrow to pay the wages bill for public servants,” he said.

“We’ve had to make a number of tough decisions since we were elected, but urgent action must continue to rein in spending and waste that was out of control under Labor.”
