I traveled throughout Myanmar last year and the country is changing. I don’t believe Obama’s visit is premature. I believe it is necessary from a geopolitical perspective even though human rights has a way to go.
The influence of China economically and politically is overwhelming for Myanmar. If human rights progress is to be made, it has a much better chance of changing with closer ties to the US than a vacuum controlled by a country with China’s poor human rights record.
Let’s trust Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and President Obama’s judgement on this issue. As with Gorbachev, there are leaders that are willing to make democratic changes for a country’s greater good, even though they may be politically and economically motivated.
