Old mortar bombs found in Canberra bush

Defence will destroy four unexploded mortar bombs found in an area of Canberra bushland near the Australian War Memorial.

Defence said these items were found in the Canberra Nature Park on Mount Ainslie during a search for unexploded ordnance (UXO), old military ammunition fired but which failed to explode.

The survey follows the discovery of an item of old ammunition by a member of the public near the Campbell Park Defence Department offices in July last year.

Defence removed that item and undertook a preliminary survey which indicated there might be more UXO in an area used as a training ground and firing range in the 1940s and 1950s.

A detailed survey, performed by a specialist company, confirmed there was UXO present.

Defence said access to the park would remain restricted for the period of the detonation of the old ordnance.

“The Department of Defence will work with ACT Policing to ensure that all necessary safety precautions are taken,” Defence said in a statement.
