Azamara Club Cruises is all about the places their small-sized, full-featured ships visit around the world, rarely repeating itineraries. Not long ago, the two-ship line announced what they call an Azamazing Evening as yet another included part of what they do. The idea caught my attention immediately. It reminded me very much of an experience I had on my first Azamara sailing, still a standard-defining voyage when talk of a “destination focus” comes up. Recently, Azamara inaugurated the new program, included in every voyage and just reading the story about it brought back some azamazing memories of my own.
Azamazing evenings are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that spotlight a destination’s true culture. They include the sights, sounds and tastes that are mostly only found among the nightlife, and are individually created by Azamara in ports of calls on the cruise line’s mostly non-repeating itineraries. They can do that because they are in port at night, if not staying overnight, long after big ships have moved along.
The AzAmazing Evenings events are not “shore excursions”, cannot be purchased off-the-shelf from Azamara or any third-party supplier, and adds solid credibility to Azamara Club Cruises claim of being the most distinctive destination immersion cruise brand. This is that philosophy of longer stays and more overnights in port to provide guests the opportunity for night touring in action.
The latest AzAmazing Evenings event took place at Sete, France, during the cruise line’s President’s Voyage, where President and CEO Larry Pimentel and wife Sandi are currently hosting a very special itinerary along the Cote D’Azur.
While at Sete on Thursday evening, guests experienced first-hand the regionally historic sport of ‘jouste,’ or water jousting. A lively band heralded the impending contest as they led guests through the streets of Sete to the Grand Canal, where two vibrantly decorated boats awaited to carry two long-rivaling teams of men (married men in Red and bachelors in Blue) into one face-off after another.
Azamara Quest‘s Captain Carl Smith led the Red jousting team to guests’ delight, but lamentably, was vanquished by the village’s seven-time champion jouster. The festivities continued with local wine and delectable fare, concluding with an exhilarating fireworks exhibition as Azamara Quest departed Sete in the late evening.
Sounds like a great experience doesn’t it? Interestingly, its just what they do at Azamara Club Cruises… Azamazing evening or not. When we sailed on Azamara Journey an overnight stop in Rouen, France brought took us on the ‘footsteps of Joan of Arc’ by day and to a local restaurant for a classic French dinner that evening, complete with hours of lively conversation.
It’s funny really, when Azamara is working their magic and these events are unfolding, you don’t think nearly as much about it until that “pinch me, am I dreaming?” moment arrives. Here is how that might have gone for those Azamara guests in Sete, experiencing the water jousting:
Many may have thought it interesting and stood by watching as though they were viewing an episode of The Tudors on a PBS Masterpiece Theater broadcast. Some may have thought of period novels they may have read at another time or place. But at some point, either right then and there or perhaps later, even after the voyage is over, that “pinch me, am I dreaming?” moment comes and you realize that you are indeed totally immersed in what you are experiencing.
For me in Rouen it was when Azamara arranged an exclusive tour of a space artist Claude Monet used as a studio at one time. I had studied Monet’s work in college, had a friend who painted and was quite influenced by Monet’s work and have some of his work (prints) in our home. Standing in Monet’s studio, across from the Notre Dame cathedral then looking around in just about every direction, where little had changed since that time, brought my “pinch me, am I dreaming?” I was there. This was not on TV, in a movie or gracing the pages of a book. More importantly, We were there and when I see others I was traveling with, the topic of that experience will be fondly recalled.
Prior to Sete, the very first AzAmazing Evenings event was launched on March 30 at Gibraltar, U.K., where the historic St. Michael’s Cave was opened exclusively to guests of Azamara that night.
Guests were welcomed to St. Michael’s Cave by members of the Re-enactment Society “History Alive,” clad in traditional Scottish Regiment dress uniform, and ushered into a unique night-time cocktail reception with local canapés in Cathedral Cave, a large cave within St. Michael’s Cave named for its pipe organ-like stalactite formations in the expansive space.
The main feature of the evening was a private concert in the cave by the Royal Gibraltar Regiment Band and Corps of Drums in Cathedral Cave, accompanied by Gibraltar’s famed-vocalist Andrea Simpson.
Living in Orlando, we know all about magic and making dreams come true when visitors come to town. In a way, Orlando is very much a dream factory, pumping out millions of magical moments every year. We know what it takes to tap people in just the right place to make for a lifetime memory. Whitney tells stories of it happening every single day at Disney theme parks, ships and resorts.
In other words, we know magic when we see it and Azamara hits that magic button regularly throughout their voyages. Azamazing Evenings put the spotlight on what they do so well, solidly positioning them as a the standard for other destination-focused cruise lines to aspire to.
Throughout the President’s Voyage, which concludes at Monte Carlo on April 10, Pimentel is sharing his thoughts and insights through his new Twitter handle @LarryPimentel, as guests of Azamara Quest join in unforgettable and authentic cultural experiences while calling at some of the region’s most intriguing destinations. Travelers also can join the President’s Voyage virtually by following the tag #AzAmazing. From what we have seen coming from that Twitter stream, it is an accurate depiction not only of the current voyage but really gives a good taste of what Azamara does.
Those two special affairs were the very first AzAmazing Evenings. But, frankly (as we do here), these are simply illustrations of what Azamara does all the time.
Make no mistake about it: An Azamara Club Cruise voyage is premium-priced. But for those who truly appreciate lifetime experience-quality events along with a five-star floating resort experience, on one of their ships is the place to be.
In addition to fabulous off-the-ship experiences, while on the ship, included are unique wines, international beers and select standard spirits in the ships’ bars, lounges and restaurants in a sophisticated country club ambience. Azamara guests also receive extraordinary and personal service from every member of the crew whose aim is to anticipate guests every need. They hit that mark with a high degree of accuracy.
Guests also enjoy fine cuisine and boutique wines from around the world, as well as more inclusive amenities, such as included gratuities; complimentary bottled water, sodas, specialty coffee, and teas; complimentary self-service laundry; English Butler service for suite guests; and shuttle transportation to city centers in ports, where available.
