Two teen boys, Damien Garza, 19, and Javier Garza, 17, have been charged with murder in the shooting death of 14-year-old Michael Orozco as he was leaving a West Side store in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood on Sunday, April 7.
According to the Chicago Tribune, it wasn’t known whether or not the two Garzas were related.
Michael Orozco was walking from the store with two teenaged girls in the 2200 block of South Leavitt Street when a light green van stopped and backed up, then a gunman jumped out and opened fire, police said.
The shooting occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. With a bullet in his chest, Michael Orozco was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he died later Sunday afternoon.
Police arrested Damien Garza, Javier Garza, and a third male not far from the scene of the shooting and also recovered a weapon.
The third male suspect was released without being charged.
Javier Garza, 17, of the 2900 block of North 75th Court in Elmwood Park, was charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, according to police.
Damien Garza, 19, of the 4500 block of South Wood Street, was charged with one count each of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated reckless driving without a license, and cited for operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
Police believe the shooting to be gang related, with Michael Orozco and the Garzas representing rival gangs.
Michael’s mother vehemently denied that her son, a freshman at the Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy, had any gang affiliations.
