The Premier Colin Barnett will push ahead with proposed changes to the CCC, but not in 2011
The State Government has confirmed it is unlikely to introduce legislation into Parliament this year to change the focus of the Corruption and Crime Commission to organised crime.
The Premier Colin Barnett had previously indicated the changes would be introduced in 2011, but with only five sitting weeks left he says that will no longer be the case.
“We are still are proposing some changes to the CCC,” he said.
The Opposition Leader Eric Ripper says the government should abandon the legislative changes altogether.
“What it will do is compromise the independent scrutiny of the police force and the independent scrutiny of Mr Barnett and his government,” he said.
The government is on the verge of appointing a new CCC Commissioner and the Premier denies the delay will cause problems.
“No I think they’re unrelated,” Mr Barnett said.
Mr Ripper disagrees.
“Doubt about the CCC’s mandate has been a problem all year; that’s why it’s taken the government so long to get a new leader for the CCC.”
