The start of Miss Trierweiler’s romance with Mr Hollande was particularly
controversial; the pair had started a relationship in 2005 but had kept it
quiet during the 2007 presidential elections when Ségolène Royal – then Mr
Hollande’s official partner with whom he had four children was the Socialist
candidate.
Miss Trierweiler confirmed that Miss Royal was aware of the liaison in a new
book, extracts of which were published in yesterday’s Paris Match. “She
knew the truth about the real nature of the ties uniting François and me,”
she is cited as saying in “Valérie, Carla, Cécilia, Bernadette and the
others on the campaign trail”.
But she could not bring herself to vote for Miss Royal, she added, as it was
too “painful”.
The feisty mother of three, who hopes to retain her job as a Paris Match
journalist while carrying out her first lady duties, is expected to fly with
Mr Hollande to the US on May 18 for a G8 summit.
