Putin vows to beef up Russian army

“We mustn’t tempt anyone with our weakness,” Putin wrote in his sixth pre-election manifesto published on the state newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta on Monday.

“Therefore, we will never in any circumstances give away our potential of strategic deterrence and will strengthen it,” he said in his article.

He reiterated that Russian armed forces would be equipped with weapons and hardware that “will shoot more accurately and react faster than similar systems of any potential enemy.”

The Russian presidential contender went on to say that Moscow is set to spend about 23 trillion rubles (about $770 billion dollars) over the next decade to purchase more than 400 intercontinental ballistic missiles, more than 600 combat aircraft, dozens of submarines and other navy vessels and thousands of armored vehicles.

His remarks were the latest in the wave of warnings against a US-led NATO’s controversial missile shield in Europe. He warned that Russia’s response to the deployment would be efficient and “asymmetrical.”

“This will be a fully relevant response to the US steps in the missile defense sphere … The policy of the US and NATO over the deployment of the missile defense system makes us take these actions,” Putin said.

Putin has already warned that his country would target US missile defense sites in Europe if Washington goes ahead with the planned shield.

The Russian government has long opposed the NATO’s disputed plan of deploying an anti-missile shield in Europe, arguing that the would-be system in its “backyard” is not to secure Washington’s European allies but is effectively aimed at Russia.

Moscow has called for the shared control of the system, but Washington refuses to share the responsibility for protecting NATO member-states with a third party.

NATO claims that the anti-missile shield is planned to thwart possible attacks from ‘rogue’ states, and it will go ahead with the plan despite Russia’s concerns.
