NSW Labor leader John Robertson says he is happy to have the NSW corruption watchdog investigating bribe allegations levelled against former colleague Ian Macdonald.
The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is looking into whether Ron Medich, who is charged with the murder of businessman Michael McGurk, conspired with former boxer Lucky Gattellari in July 2009 to offer Mr Macdonald $10,000.
The cash was allegedly to be a reward for arranging meetings between Mr Medich and executives of electricity companies.
It’s also alleged Lucky Gattellari paid for Mr Macdonald to receive services and hotel accommodation as a reward for arranging the meetings.
Mr Macdonald was the minister for energy in the government of former Labor premier Nathan Rees at the time. He left parliament in disgrace last year over claims he had rorted his expenses.
Mr Robertson said on Thursday he welcomed ICAC’s investigation, saying the watchdog was the appropriate place to deal with the allegations.
“Ian Macdonald isn’t part of my team in Labor and certainly I think that if these allegations are to be dealt with they ought to be dealt with at ICAC,” he told reporters in Sydney.
“I’m always surprised when you hear these things, and what I want to see is ICAC investigate these.
“I am happy this is being dealt with at ICAC.”
The ICAC public hearings are due to begin on November 24.
Mr Medich is charged with murder and soliciting the murder of Mr McGurk at his home on Sydney’s lower north shore in September 2009.
