Run for your life, Tony

HE left the water just minutes before a large shark was spotted off Manly beach today but lifesavers say Opposition Leader Tony Abbott was in no more danger than when he is in parliament “surrounded by sharks”.

Mr Abbott, who only waded waist-deep into the water to conduct a demonstration with the Manly Life Saving Club, had just left the sand when the shark alarm sounded about 10am.

Swimmers were ordered to leave the water immediately.

Manly LSC general manager Marc Manion said an experienced surfer had reported a “big” shark off The Corso.

But he said Mr Abbott, who is also the Warringah MP, was in no real danger.

“He was far safer on Manly beach than being in parliament surrounded by sharks,” he said. Mr Abbott made the special visit to thank volunteers and to take part in training drills with a group of young nippers.

And although he is a proud member of Queenscliff Surf Life Saving Club, Mr Abbott said he was happy to don Manly’s colours for the morning’s activities.

“They appreciate that I am the local member for Manly, I am the local member for North Steyne and I am the local member for Queenscliff,” he said.

Mr Abbot was joined by his daughter Frances, a surf lifesaver for 10 years, who spoke of the benefits of taking part in nippers.

“It was just a great experience,” she said.
