First priority…QR says it has increased passenger security measures. (Queensland Rail – file image)
Queensland Rail says it has increased safety measures after a boy fell from a train en route to Cairns.
The five-year-old fell from an open carriage of the Sunlander train before 7:00pm AEST on Wednesday, and was found walking beside the tracks near the Bruce Highway a short time later.
He was released from the Cairns Base Hospital on Thursday afternoon, and QR says it has offered his family assistance with accommodation and travel expenses.
QR spokeswoman Cathy Heffernan says it is introducing extra onboard safety announcements and warning signs at exits while an investigation takes place.
“I don’t have the exact time frame for the end of the report but it will be a thorough investigation, so it will certainly need to go through and meet with all the relevant parties and do all the thorough checks around the rolling stock, so it will take it’s time,” she said.
“Safety is our number one priority and obviously our customers and our staff who travel on those trains is our priority.
“The train doesn’t move or shouldn’t move with the doors being open, so as part of our process when leaving the station, we check that the doors are shut and then the train is given the all clear to move.”
QR is also investigating the installation of security cameras and alarms at exits.
