Scots: Queen no source of nat’l pride

While the British government is trumpeting about the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne across the UK including in Scotland, a You Gov survey found only 41 percent of Scots find the Queen as a source of national pride.

This comes as the poll found 58 percent of Scots believe the comedian Billy Connolly gives them a sense of national pride.

In the context of the findings for the think tank, British Future, John Curtice professor of politics at Strathclyde University said the results are “not surprising” as the British crown is a symbol of Britain rather than Scotland.

“The monarchy is a symbol of Britain, and British symbols are stronger in England than they are in Scotland,” he said.

The poll, which comes in the heat of the Scottish National Party’s campaign for independence from Britain, points to the depth of an English-Scottish divide, which more than 300 years of British monarchical rule has failed to repair.

The results also open a new perspective before the SNP, which has so far supported independence from Britain while keeping the Queen as head of state, to hold its promised independence referendum based on the principle of shaking off both the British government and monarchy.
