Three Americans are missing near Mount Kosciuszko after failing to return from a camping trip.
A fourth member of the group, a 24-year-old woman, alerted police on Sunday morning after becoming separated from her friends during a storm the night before.
She used a compass to navigate her way to Alpine Way, 6km southwest of Thredbo Village, and alerted authorities about 11am (AEDT).
The young woman told police she had set out with three friends on an overnight camping trip on Saturday morning but they become separated when her tent blew down.
Police are working with SES and Rural Fire Service volunteers to find the missing 24-year-old woman from Massachusetts, and two men aged 22 and 24, both from Ohio.
The group are thought to have been camping on the Rams Head Range when the storm hit about 2am on Sunday.
Bad weather prevented an aerial search later in the day but searchers will take to the skies on Monday, police said.
Police have been told the three have some trekking experience and although they have warm clothes and some food, they don’t have an emergency distress beacon (EPIRB).
