Skating news roundup: Injuries take out Kim and Korpi, Gold switches coaches (Video)

While two-time World champion Miki Ando is making her competition comeback this week at Nebelhorn Trophy in Germany, news has been coming out in other parts of the world today of injuries to some of her main competitors this season.

Kim out six weeks
The biggest bit of news is to reigning Olympic and World champion Yuna Kim. After breezing through to her second World title earlier this year, she has suffered her first setback on her quest to defend her Olympic gold. Yonhap reported today that an injury to her right foot will take her off the ice for six weeks. She will also miss the Grand Prix series – her two assignments this season were Skate Canada and Trophee Eric Bompard.

Korpi out of Nebelhorn
After a coaching change to Rafael Arutyunyan last month, 2012 European silver medalist Kiira Korpi announced a few days ago that she was withdrawing from this week’s Nebelhorn Trophy because of a partial tear of her Achilles tendon. Korpi was attempting to qualify a spot for Finland for the Olympics this season. Finland does not currently have a berth for the ladies partly because Korpi was not at the World Championships due to injury.

She will now have to hope that teammate Juulia Turkkila will finish high enough for a spot in Sochi. Turkkila is currently in the middle of the pack of 35 skaters after the short program.

Gold to Carroll
As she took a somewhat disappointing silver at the U.S. International Figure Skating Classic two weeks ago, rumors were swirling that U.S. silver medalist Gracie Gold was heading to California to try out with Frank Carroll. Gold is officially there now preparing for her next competition, Skate Canada.

No Rochette in Sochi
Reigning Olympic bronze medalist Joannie Rochette confirmed what many had suspected today, that she will not be at Sochi as a competitor. Rochette announced two weeks ago that she will not be competing this season and will likely be at Sochi in a television capacity. Stay tuned!
