Solution to Syria crisis, dialogue: Iran

“Tehran has always urged the [Syrian] administration and opposition to [resolve their disputes through] dialogue,” Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in a meeting with Omani Deputy Prime Minister Fahd bin Mahmud al-Said in Muscat on Sunday.

“Iran supports the reform process [undertaken by] Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to realize the legitimate and peaceful demands of the people of this country; and rejects and condemns any foreign intervention in Syria by outsiders who seek conflict and tribal wars there,” he added.

Syria has been the scene of unrest since mid-March 2011, with demonstrations being held both against and in support of Assad’s government.

The West and the Syrian opposition blame Damascus for the year-long turmoil, but the government says the “terrorists” are responsible for the unrest, which it says is being orchestrated from abroad.

Amir-Abdollahian, who is in Muscat to attend the first Iran-Oman Strategic Consultation Committee meeting, said the Westerners seek to change the geographical make-up of the region, adding “The Islamic Republic will not allow the interests of the regional nations to be jeopardized by the conspiracies of foreign powers.”

For his part, the Omani official described the Tehran-Muscat ties as “excellent and historically rooted,” adding that Iran is a powerful and influential country and plays a major role in regional and global developments.
