Six people have been killed in a southern Somali port town following a bombing attack that targeted the home of a militia leader opposed to the al-Shabab militants.
“The explosion occurred soon after I entered the house,” said tribal leader Iftin Hassan Basto in a statement following the Saturday incident in which the bomber set off his explosives when challenged by security men.
“My security guards saw a man who tried to infiltrate them and when they confronted him he blew himself up,” Basto added in the statement.
The tribal leader further stated that six people, including a child, were killed in the bombing attack, which also injured seven others.
The attack took place in the town of Kismayo, a former stronghold of Somalia’s anti-government al-Shabab militants.
“We knew they were planning such attacks and we will continue fighting these terrorists,” Basto emphasized in his statement.
According to an eye witness cited in press reports, “The explosion was huge and several dead bodies were removed from the house. Security forces have cordoned off the area after the explosion.”
Somalia has been the scene of clashes between government forces and al-Shabab fighters since 2006.
The al-Shabab fighters have been pushed out of Mogadishu and other major cities in Somalia by the African Union Mission in Somalia, which is made up of troops from Uganda, Burundi, Djibouti, Sierra Leone and Kenya.
