Gunmen have ambushed a bus and a police vehicle in southern Kenya, killing at least three people.
Police said armed men opened fire on the bus travelling to the tourist island of Lamu on Friday and then targeted a police vehicle that stopped to intervene as well as a third car.
Security services have launched an operation to find several people missing following the attack. It is still not clear whether the missing people were abducted or fled in panic.
Daniel Kahosho, head of Kenya Police Reservists in Mpeketoni in Lamu County, said the gunmen sprayed the bus with bullets, adding, “Two lorries which were carrying mangoes were also attacked and three people in total have been killed.”
There has been no claim of responsibility for the gunfire so far.
According to latest reports, about 100 people have been killed in attacks in the coastal region of Kenya since mid-June.
Somalia’s al-Shabab group has claimed responsibility for much of the violence in Kenya, saying it is in response to the presence of thousands of Kenyan troops in Somalia as part of the African Union force supporting Mogadishu.
Kenya sent troops into Somalia in late 2011, after al-Shabab fighters carried out a series of raids inside Kenya. The Kenyan forces are part of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which gets training and equipment from the United States.
