Sydney school girl threatened with knife

A 14-year-old girl was grabbed around the throat and threatened with a knife by a man as she walked home from school in Sydney’s northwest.

Police say the attack happened as the girl walked across a footbridge near the Benowie Walking Track and Great Northern Walk at Thornleigh about 3pm (AEST) on Thursday.

The footbridge is located at the end of Bellamy Street above the Zig Zag River.

Police say the girl was pushed backwards towards a side-track near the bridge but she fell to the ground.

It’s believed the man was distracted by people walking nearby when the girl escaped and run home.

A search of the area by foot patrols, the Police Dog Unit and Polair failed to locate the man, who is described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in his 40s or 50s, about 170cm to 175cm tall, of medium build, with grey hair and a short grey beard.

The girl told police the man had a rough-sounding voice.

He was wearing a red and blue long-sleeved checked shirt, a grey baseball cap, and light-coloured pants that had pockets on both the ankles and hips.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Ku-ring-Gai Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
