Labor looks set to lose one of its two seats in the Tasmanian Legislative Council after voting on Saturday.
Two of the 15 upper house seats were contested in the ballot, with counting showing Labor in trouble in the division of Hobart.
Independent former Hobart lord mayor Rob Valentine provisionally led with 37.04 per cent, with most of the votes counted, while Greens candidate Penelope Ann (22.43 per cent) led Labor’s Dean Winter (19.31 per cent).
Analysts said Mr Valentine looked likely to win, while Mr Winter’s numbers will be of concern to a state government languishing in the polls.
A result may be called on Sunday after a provisional distribution of preferences, but could take until the deadline for postal votes of May 15.
The seat had previously been held for nearly 20 years by the ALP’s Doug Parkinson, who retired before Saturday’s election.
In the division of Western Tiers, independent incumbent Greg Hall (73.58 per cent) leads John Hawkins (26.42 per cent) and appears certain to have been returned as the member.
Tasmania’s upper house is dominated by independents, who held 12 of the 15 seats before Saturday’s ballot.
Labor held two seats and the Liberal Party one.
