“The envoy (Annan) is considering an invitation to visit Syria. … We can expect the visit soon,” Ahmed Fawzi, the spokesman for Annan, said on Friday without specifying a date for the visit.
Annan, who was tasked by the United Nations and the Arab League with a mission to end the unrest in the country, visited Damascus in March 2012 for the first time since the unrest hit Syria in mid-March las year.
The envoy would visit Damascus as the head of the UN observer mission in Syria said on Friday that violence has been significantly reduced in areas where observers have been deployed.
Major General Robert Mood noted that the mission has been successful in reducing hostilities and asked all sides to give it a chance to bring the crisis to an end.
Mood also emphasized that only genuine dialogue can resolve the problems in Syria.
Annan’s six-point peace plan calls for establishing a cease-fire between the government and the opposition, allowing humanitarian groups access to the population, releasing detainees and starting a political dialogue.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011.
While the West and the Syrian opposition say the government is responsible for the killings, Damascus blames “outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest and insists that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
