The President’s re-election team is attempting to paint Mr Romney, who made a
fortune of $250 million (£160 million) in private equity, as similarly
detached from the concerns of struggling Americans.
The former Massachusetts governor has repeatedly fuelled this portrayal with
gaffes, such as when he remarked that he was “not concerned about the
very poor”. His wealth was highlighted again this week when a horse
owned by his wife, Ann, earned a spot on the US Olympic dressage team.
William Galston, a former aide to President Bill Clinton, said that Mr Kerry
was an “intelligent and articulate” man who would be able to mimic
Mr Romney’s phrasing and debate tactics.
“There are also, at least on the surface, similarities between them –
height, vast family wealth, a reputation for a certain kind of aloofness –
and excellent hair,” said Mr Galston.
Mr Romney, who was yesterday finishing a six-day bus tour of battleground
states, has not yet chosen an ally to play Mr Obama in his own debate
preparations. The debates are due to be held in Colorado, New York and
Florida in October.
