A Victorian man injured when a firecracker exploded in his face in a backyard party on New Year’s Eve has died in hospital.
The 34-year-old Tarneit man was raced to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition after the accident with head injuries just after midnight on Sunday.
He died around 6pm (AEDT) on Sunday night.
Senior paramedic Brett Parker says a large number of people were at the Tarneit home, in Melbourne’s west, when the firecracker exploded.
“The man was unconscious and suffering significant head injuries from the cracker,” Mr Parker said.
“Due to the serious head injuries, intensive care paramedics put the man into a coma and took over breathing for him.”
The Arson and Explosives Squad is investigating the incident.
