“We cannot wait until 2019,” said Frank Baronowski, mayor of
Gelsenkirchen.
“Now is the time to concentrate on problem areas in the west. The need is
greater here.” Mr Baronowksi said he wanted to get the government of
North Rhine-Westphalia to scrap the solidarity payments.
But Armin Laschet, deputy leader of the Christian Democrats in the North
Rhine-Westphalia parliament, appeared to scotch any attempts to do this
saying there would be no debate over the payments before 2019, and until
then “need not geography” should dictate where the money goes.
