A man believed to be an Australian has been found dead in a Japanese ski resort town in the country’s north, police said.
A police spokesman said the body was found in a river near a convenience store on Sunday afternoon in the popular destination of Niseko on the island of Hokkaido.
“We are continuing to study his identity but he seems to be an Australian who was enjoying a holiday with several other friends,” he said.
“I heard an official from the Australian consulate visited the scene.”
News Limited reported the man was believed to be a 45-year-old who did not turn up for his flight home.
Officials from the Australian embassy in Japan could not immediately be reached for a comment.
