A baby goat was bludgeoned to death by a group of youths in Palm Island, in Queensland’s north, in a sickening attack that was caught on camera and is now being investigated by animal welfare authorities.
The RSCPA Queensland has called on the public to help identify the young boys who beat the tiny wild animal with sticks on Curacoa Island, an uninhabited part of the Palm Island group, earlier this week.
“We’ve done a lot of work in Palm Island over the last couple of years, and the council [Palm Island Shire Council] and ourselves are pretty disappointed by what has happened,” RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty told ninemsn.
The photos were secretly taken by a horrified onlooker on a nearby boat, who forwarded them on to the RSPCA.
They show two boys, aged about 12 to 14, standing over the goat.
The terrified creature can be seen cowering as one of the boys lashes it with a stick, as a third person sits nearby.
“The problem with these things is that animals can’t talk, so we’re relying on someone to come forward and help us with our investigation,” Mr Beatty said.
Mr Beatty said it was not an isolated incident of animal cruelty on the island, where there have been numerous incidents of people attacking wild brumbies.
Ninemsn has contacted Palm Island mayor Alfred Lacey for comment.
