According to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), a Royal Air Force airman and a soldier from 1st Battalion Welsh Guards were killed in the Lashkar Gah district of Helmand province on Saturday May 12.
Stop The War Coalition convener Lindsey German said the UK military toll rise in Afghanistan “underlines the failure and futility of the war being conducted by NATO forces.”
“These soldiers died because the British government would rather continue fighting an unjustified war that is being lost than admit that after 11 years nothing has been achieved but mass slaughter and destruction,” she added.
The two British servicemen were shot dead by two people wearing Afghan Police uniforms while they were providing security for a meeting with local officials at a patrol base.
While such attacks have become increasingly common since the burning of copies of the Holy Qur’an at a US base in February, the UK Defence Secretary Philip Hammond claimed that these events occur “occasionally,” adding the sacrifice British troops are making in Afghanistan is for “our [UK’s] own national security.”
The British military’s death toll in the Afghan war has topped 414 since the US-led invasion of the country began in October 2001.
